Ductless Air Conditioning

Ductless air conditioning units are the perfect solutions for home’s, Office’s or any other building’s cooling or heating needs. These units allow you to cool or heat the buildings without any duct work or windows, and hence the term ductless stems out. These units are also referred to as split system air conditioning units since the ductless air conditioning unit splits the hot side from the cold side of the system and also because the whole component is split into 2 components, one which has to be kept inside the building and the other outside the building.

These units are particularly advised over the ducted air conditioning units in case you need a perfect hassle free air conditioner which regulates the temperature evenly and continuously and of course if you are not bothered to spend a bit more of your money in return for a comfortable dwelling .

Ductless air conditioning systems have two basic components:

  1. Indoor air handling unit.
  2. The outdoor condensing unit.

The air handling unit as the name suggests lies inside the building and the noisy condensing unit lies outside the house. This is reason for the Ductless air conditioning systems not being noisy inside the buildings as compared to the widow air conditioning units.

Ductless air conditioning systems- How do they work?

The system‘s outdoor and the indoor unit (discussed above) have two small isolated coolant pipes connected between them. They work as an air cooler during the warm days by extracting the  heat from inside the building and transferring it outdoors ,but  as a heater during the cold days by the pumping the heat energy into the home from the outside.

  1. The indoor air handling unit has a refrigerant coil located inside it. Now the warm air inside the room passes through the return air duct of the refrigerant coil which is filled with cold liquid refrigerant.  The refrigerant (also known as coolant) absorbs the heat from the warm air inside the room and evaporates into a gas form. The indoor air handling unit then distributes the cool air uniformly inside the room.
  2. The warm coolant now moves towards a pump which pumps the coolant towards the compressor which is inside the outdoor condensing unit. The compressor compresses the warm coolant and brings it to an extremely high pressure and high temperature state (This is where more of the electrical energy is consumed).
  3. The temperature of the coolant is a lot more than the surrounding atmosphere temperature. Now , as the fan blows the laws of physics demands that the outside air share the heat  energy from the coolant and finally the refrigerant comes down to the atmosphere temperature.
  4. Now this refrigerant is condensed to liquid form and thus the temperature of the coolant further decreases to a very low temperature. This is then sent back to the Indoor air handling unit and this cycle continues. (The whole process can be considered as similar to the working of a refrigerator. But in this case the system is big and complex).
  5. The heating mode is the reverse of this process.

Ductless air conditioning units- How are they better than the ducted air conditioning units?

Ductless air conditioning units have a lot of advantages over ducted air conditioning units or the widow air conditioning unit.

  1. Firstly they can be installed anywhere inside the building which is particularly useful as compared to the  widow air conditioning units since these units can be installed only near the windows.
  2. These units act as a cooler during summer and a heater during winter, which is a very good feature and absolutely useful.
  3. The presence of the condensing unit outside the building would mean the Ductless air conditioner is virtually noise free. As opposed to this, the ducted air conditioners have their condensing units, inside the building and are particularly very noisy.
  4. The inverter technology used in Ductless air conditioning helps in keeping the temperatures even at all times and the all places inside the room. On the other hand the ducted air conditioning unit which does not use this technology facilitates timely fluctuation in the temperatures. They also do not provide proper distribution of the air inside the room, thus making some places of the room too hot and some too cold.
  5. Ductless air conditioning is more environment friendly as it is at least 20% more efficient than its counter parts.  The latest microprocessors (which have artificial intelligence)   installed in the Ductless air conditioning systems have helped the Ductless air conditioning solution providers to optimize the power requirements to the fullest extent.  A ductless air conditioning unit produces only the capacity required, thus minimizing energy consumption.  Whereas other systems always work on 100% capacity even though it is not required and thus consuming full energy.
  6. Due to the advanced power saving s and a very high efficiency, these are said to be cheaper than the ducted air conditioning units on the long run.
  7. About 3-4 Indoor air handling units can be connected to a single outdoor condensing unit in a Ductless air conditioning system. Further each indoor air handling units can be operated based on different needs and temperatures required.
  8. Ductless air conditioner comes with remote controls for each Indoor air handling unit. More over even some of the mobile phones can be frequency tuned to act as remote controls.

We can see a clearly see that Ductless air conditioning is a lot better than its counterpart and economical as well in the long run.

Companies providing top class Ductless air conditioning units:

There are many more companies but these are few companies which have got good, user responses.

  • Mitsubishi Electric HVAC.
  • LG electronics.
  • Samsung.
  • Daikin Industries ltd.
  • Blue Star.

Ductless air conditioner Installation:

Though most of the companies which manufacture Ductless air conditioning units provide installation service, there are also a lot of Air Conditioning Solutions providers who design, and install the Ductless air conditioners as per the requirements.

Ductless air conditioner – Choosing the best AC

While choosing a ductless air conditioner to your home, office or any other building, there are many things which has to be taken care of and you will have to make certain trade offs between cost vs. quality or capacity.

The ductless air conditioners come in various varieties suiting different needs and having different features. Deciding on an air conditioner which matches your budget and expectation along with the required features is a very important task (Ex It would not be a wise job to buy a 2Ton capacity ductless air conditioner to a small house with a single room, not only the cost of the ductless air conditioner would be higher, the electricity requirements would also be much much higher). I would not tell you the best brand or the model to choose (Since the technology is ever evolving with new products every day). But in the subsequent sections I would give you a brief idea, which would help you in choosing a good ductless air conditioner which would possibly meet your needs and be cost effective. Some important factors are:

The climate of your city

The ductless air conditioning unit  should be suiting the climate of your residing city/town. Cities with higher temperature would require high capacity Air conditioners compared to the cities with lower average temperature. A city with very less temperatures should have a good heating unit as well.

The size of your room

A small size room of size around 80 sq feet and having a temperature of around 38-40 degrees would require a ductless air conditioning unit of capacity around 1Ton and the input power would be of around 1.2 Kilo Watts, while that of a 120 sq feet room and having the same other cooling requirements would require a ductless air conditioner of 1.5 Ton and the input power would be of around 1.6 Kilo Watts. Similarly big corporate buildings would require more than one cooling units.

The floor of residence

The rooms in top floors will generally be hotter than the one’s below. This is because the top floor is the one which absorbs the most sunlight and in the process acts as a shield to the lower floors. Hence the top floor would need an air conditioner of slightly higher capacity than the one beneath.

There are several other features as the inverter technology, the plasma filter technology, the anti bacterial filter etc. The inverter technology provides more even cooling and reduces the electric energy consumption. The plasma filter technology which does the air purification and generates ozone and plasma, the anti bacterial filter is also a type of air purifier.  The ductless air conditioners with these features can be helpful according to the requirements.
